The similarities in the English spelling of Taiwan and Thailand always make people who are not familiar with geography or history confused. However, what is the real difference between these two countries in arts and the culture? The exhibition “ThaiTai: A Measure of Understanding” that is taken place at URS21 Chung Shan Creative Hub, Taipei, Taiwan from 7th December 2013 presents up to 30 contemporary artists’ works from both Taiwan and Thailand. This exhibition is curated by Open- Contemporary Art Center (Taiwan) and duo artists jiandyin (Thailand) under ThaiTai project. It focuses on two stages of dialogue which were developed by the site- specific works during Artist Residency in Taiwan and Thailand respectively. At the first stage, Open-Contemporary Art Center formally stationed their space in Bangkok, realizing through a partnership with jiandyin, Thailand for half year to organize art related/residency programs, a hub for Taiwanese artist to research and developed their work and subsequently the ThaiTai project was organized the first stage exhibition in Bangkok Art and Culture Centre in the latter last year; in this year, the project was moved to Taiwan and expanded its scale as the second stage. Therefore, Thai artists, one after another, came to participate in residency programs and to create their own site-specific works in Taiwan. This exhibition includes variety of works such as video installation, documentation, photography, sculpture, documentaries and others. As the name “ThaiTai : A Measure of Understanding” implies, it explores how artists understand each other’s local culture, history and other issues by their creation under the region, language, and social atmosphere.

“THAITAI: A Measure of Understanding” is an artists run project by OCAC (Taiwan) and duo artists jiandyin (Thailand), a contemporary art project independently initiated for the first time between Thai and Taiwanese artists. The two-stage spine of dialogue is the works of the two countries’ artists created locally and overseas. The first stage began in Bangkok Art and Culture Centre in late 2012 and follow by 2nd stage in Taipei, in December 2013. In all, 10 Taiwanese and 10 Thai artists will collaborate, exhibit, and extend the activities such as forum at Chulalongkorn University; performance, and workshop to the Art Centre of Silpakorn University and OCAC Bangkok. The second stage will operate in Taiwan in 2013.

The Thailand/Taiwan contemporary art project focuses on the cross-culture experience of contemporary art, and the possible solution for it to substitute Western perspective. Contemporary art has paved us a way to intervene geopolitics. Not only is it able to stay independent from the reality, but also possesses the characteristic to infiltrate. This flexibility fittingly compensates the regional division within the discourse of anti-globalization and facilitates the regional localized aestheticization. When foreign culture has become brand names and presents itself as such in art market, culture experience and the integrity of art practice has been simplified as mere icons and pictures, and the details are lost in the process. From this standpoint, “THAITAI: A Measure of Understanding” poses questions and attempts to zero in on the irreducible interpersonal/ social experiences. Through transnational conversation and local practice, we would like to discuss how to annotate a scenario of artistic local communication as well as how to restore the complexity of art practice as communicative experiences.

The duo artists jiandyin from Thailand has been conducting this year-long conversation about the project with OCAC. In August 2012, OCAC, through partnership with jiandyin, relocated the their space in Bangkok for a six-month residency program for Taiwanese artists. The project tried to pay attention to the topic of cultural similarities and differences by inviting artists to participate discussions and work locally in order to imagine a work of remapping between Taiwan and Thailand. Furthermore, it can thus place the work on the opposite side of global art discourse.

Note : OCAC was founded since 2001. It is a group operated autonomously by artists in Taiwan. It has dedicated itself to curating, interdisciplinary communication, and promoting contemporary art. “THAITAI: A Measure of Understanding” is the 12th project of the OCAC Curatorial Series. The goal is to continue OCAC’s reflection on its negotiation with art and the public.

OCAC (Open Contemporary Art Center) Bangkok project, August 2012 – February 2013, Bangkok Thailand

The OCAC Bangkok project is a 6-month platform that jiandyin and OCAC co-organized and co-curated programs in August 2012-February 2013. The platform included salons or talk program that invited local and international artists to join, a 6-month residency program for Taiwanese artists who participated in THAITAI project and other artists and 3 stages in-house exhibitions.

THAITAI FEVER – STAGE ONE: We’re OPEN from August 26th to September 23rd OCAC Bangkok Grand Opening/ 17:00 August 26th 2012 Open-Contemporary Art Center (OCAC) is an artist-run space founded in Banciao (Taiwan) in 2001. Our tasks include curation, interdisciplinary exchange, art forum, study and publication. We believe that contemporary art permeates into our lives in a wider range than ever. People need a significant clue of “what is contemporary art?” with a full imagination. We look at this and attempt to dedicated ourselves to create diverse forms of which the public interacted with contemporary art. Upholding our manifestos in contemporary art, in November 2012, we will organize a curatorial project in Bangkok Art and Cultural Center (BACC), presenting Taiwan contemporary art and bringing about collaboration between Thai and Taiwan artists, with a contribution to cultural/art exchange. In order to fully fulfill our curatorial idea, OCAC moved to Bangkok to run an art space, named OCAC Bangkok (former ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY). This project was initialized by OCAC and Thai artists, Jiandyin (Jiradej and Pornpilai Meemalai), co-organized with the Art Centre of Silpakorn University, Sakarin Krue-On as project’s adviser and the space is contributed by Nopadon Kaosam-ang and Klaomard yipintsoi. We believe that living locally and having interpersonal contact help us have in-depth understanding of Thai culture/art; and therefore, we can better assist Taiwanese artist in making art in Thailand. Meanwhile, OCAC Bangkok is not only a name of an art space but also a six-month residency project. We expect OCAC Bangkok to generate new dialogue between Thai and Taiwanese contemporary art and create networking. “THAITAI FEVER – STAGE ONE: We’re OPEN“ is the first stage of our residency project in Bangkok in the form of series of exhibitions. It attempts to present various symptoms of our contemporary society, as well as the creative emergence, morph, and multiplying between Thai and Taiwanese artists. It features more than ten video works of Taiwanese and Thai artists, and one new in-situ collaboration work.
